Can Our Choice of Interior Decor Affect Our Health?
Ojai, CA, September 28, 2005
People all over are becoming increasingly health consciences, and aware and asking—beyond what we eat and what
we wear—what else can we do to improve our wellbeing? Healing Arts practitioner Jay North, author of “The Gift
of Touch” commented on a story published by The Washington Post reporting on research that suggests that nature
scenes can lower stress levels in hospital patients. The story states that already over 1000 photographs of serene
naturescapes have been placed in the Washington area medical facilities. “I find it very uplifting,” says North
who has been healing people for over 35 years, “that traditional medicine is recognizing the place of the body/mind/spirit
connection in healing. Every day I read a story or meet someone who has been helped by spiritual healing, whether
cancer survivors or people with financial or stress related problems. Even if you don’t believe in healing, the
benefits are so huge that it there is absolutely no risk in giving it a chance!”
Healing has been a staple of our society since the beginning of time, either practiced by religious men, shamans
or therapists, but there is increasing evidence that mainstream medicine is embracing the practice and combining
it with traditional treatments. Participants of the Benson Cardiac Wellness Program for coronary artery disease
have been provided with relaxation response techniques, including prayer, meditation and cognitive therapy and
have reported fewer symptoms of chest pain, less shortness of breath and fatigue, fewer symptoms of depression,
anxiety and anger, lower levels of cholesterol and blood pressure, weight loss and an increase in exercise tolerance,
not to mention a feeling of over-all well being.
“Our ancestors knew this centuries ago. They lived in connection with their spiritual essence,” says Jay North
in his new book Open Spaces, a study of the ancestral wisdom of our Native-American culture, “science and our faster
pace of life has ruptured our relationship with nature. But it is possible to reestablish the harmony. Healing
is available to anyone, all they have to do is to get out of their own way and let the spirit do the work.”
